About UGENT

Ghent University (UGENT) is an open, pluralistic and socially engaged university. It is more than 200 years old, offers more than 200 programmes (including 69 English-taught master’s programmes) and conducts in-depth research within a wide range of scientific domains. Our credo is Dare to Think: we are a haven for courageous thinkers.

The Department of Public Health and Primary Care and the Centre of General Practice have specific expertise in understanding and addressing health inequities. Since the COVID-19 epidemic, we have been particularly involved in reaching out to individuals in vulnerable situations by integrating, among others, community health workers. We are conducting epidemiologic research on social inequalities in health and have experience in applying a participatory approach in health promotion. Researchers of the department have been involved in both previous and current EU-funded research projects from Horizon 2020 and FP7 programmes, both as partners and as work package leaders.

As part of the SP-EU consortium, researchers from UGENT lead the co-creation of social prescribing interventions and oversee the randomised controlled trial (RCT) in Belgian general practitioner (GP) practices. PhD candidates from UGENT will also be part of the European Social Prescribing PhD Network that will soon be integrated within SP-EU.
