Four hubs initiated & first patient enrolled in the RCT

12 May 2026 – With the inspiring co-creation phase successfully completed, SP-EU has now entered the implementation stage of its randomised controlled trial (RCT), marking an important milestone for the project. As of this week, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin has enrolled its first patient in the RCT. Another three hubs have been successfully initiated in April, namely Hamburg, Bern/Lausanne, and Freiburg.

Hub initiation and patient enrollment will soon be in full swing across all of the ten hubs in a total of eight European countries: Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland. During the first hub initiation at the Charité, the SP-EU-RCT team conducted an intensive start-up meeting covering all trial procedures – from data security and adverse event reporting to a thorough review of the Investigator Site File (ISF). Finalising standard operating procedures (SOPs), log documents, and eCRF programming in secuTrial were key steps to get the study rolling.

The productive and collaborative on-site initiation visits that have happened already paved the way for a successful trial. We are proud of our accomplishment and grateful for all the hard work, reflecting the tremendous dedication and coordinated effort of all teams!
